As a journalism undergrad at the University of Richmond I remember living in fear of the “cliche list.” It was this ragged old piece of paper taped to a wall in one of the JR classrooms, and it contained 10 phrases that should never creep into your writing. (I seem to remember point deductions as well, but I may have made that up). This “Gobbledygook” link reminds me of that list.
