Waiting for a Fair E-book Split - David to Goliath: Keep the Advance

Via oreillyradar:

I imagine more and more authors will start seeing things as Terrill Lee Lankford does:

While this deal would have given us a quick infusion of cash, by the time that book “earned out” at a rate of three to one in the publisher’s favor in e-book sales, the publisher would have reaped a small fortune, far more than the time and money it would have invested in the project. From that point on, the split would have seemed even more ridiculous. I see it as a permanent 75% tax on a piece of work that generates income with almost no expense after the initial development and setup charges. This deal could haunt my family long after I was gone.

BEA and everything after

Brian O’Leary hits the nail on the head: “Wouldn’t that be really cool?” is the mantra of everyone who sees amazing things amidst the disruptive change in the content industries:

It would be more than nice, more than fun, more than illuminating, if we as an industry could use events like BEA as less an opportunity to predict the future and more a forum in which to examine the options. Okay, piracy is bad, but.. what if it helped sell books? Okay, we love long-form fiction and we think it should survive, but what if the people who read it now just stopped? Okay, a trade publisher provides value in choosing and curating content, but what if the world turned upside down and everyone were a writer, a publisher, a reader… Wouldn’t that be really cool?
